The beginning of an end

She weeps rocking back and forth,
sitting limp with tears dry upon the crimson cheeks
sunken in agony. Fragile hand rests upon the mattress nails tainted black and in blood. The touch soft, barely there "My baby..." she whispers. He smiles in my arms, thumb wet in his mouth,
eyes glistening in joy, a giggle and a kick of his legs!
He leans into my chestー into the cold embrace of the defunct
expecting a familiar warmth of the breast. A smile creeps against my lips.
I turn and she wails.
Eyes wide, he peers over my shoulder
tears clinging to his lashesー lets out a soft whisper
A pause.
The air reeks.
She cries.
He stares.
She drowns in the raging sea of her mind.
Misery, melancholy, sorrow. "My baby..." she repeats and I leave.
Two steps into the tunnel,
the new world welcomes him with darkness. His wide eyes looks at me with hope,
but I smile and hide the truth.
She looks at him,
he who's lifeless beside her,
eyes fresh with tears again she whispers
"My baby..."
I set him down into the boat,
there's silence. Her screams has disappeared from their ears.
He giggles once more before floating away.
There's a ghost of a smile on my lips. Somebody is waiting for my arrival but at the expense of their departure,
and I leave so to walk them later into the darkness.
